We are on their list of local accommodation, recommended by guests who happened to find that we were local to the course venue - lucky for us!!

All guests staying with us for these courses are so friendly and ready to make new friends for the weekend. Most are worried to some degree about travelling so far, feeling "out of it", or simply going on a course and all that it entails, particularly when it is awhile since education has been part of ones life!!! We have noticed that there is usually an invitation to go out for a meal together on the Saturday night but, this is only if you feel like it and there seems to be no sence of obligation!!! So, bring your sandwiches or salads for lunches/evening meals if you do not fancy going out - we have a fridge just for that purpose in the breakfast room. We have games that you can play, books you can borrow, or bring your favourite DVD's to watch!!

If driving is a problem and the train seems the easiest option then let us know we will happily pick you up from Hungerford station and drop you off for your course.

I can make you sandwiches and provide you with packed lunches, just let me know in advance, if that is what you are thinking of and I can give you an idea of what we have at the time etc.

Just happy to make your weekend as much a treat as possible!!

We have had people attending the course from Belgium, the Scottish Isles andEire all flying into Heathrow and then getting themselves to Hungerford train station.

So all you have to remember is Intelligent Horsemanship - Lambourn Venue - Stay at Curers Cottage Bed and Breakfast near Lambourn, where you know you will be looked after!!!

All The Best Julie

PS more information ring 01488 684490
Curers Cottage Bed and Breakfast, Chilton Foliat, Hungerford Berks/Wilts Border

We are willing to help and reassure our guests that the experience will be a very enjoyable, though probably a rather tiring one

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL

It has been just over a year since I wrote my last blog!! Watching the birds interact with our pets over the years has been very amusing, at times, incredibly enlightening...

like the time Fluff our beautiful Himalayan mother rabbit took flight at Tabby cat about to pounce on a Goldfinch picking at the Cornflowers!! Simply amazing. She chased him all the way into the kitchen!! And no! She was not an agressive rabbit.

I have never owned an agressive rabbit they have all been great fun. Believing, the more you put into a pet the more you get out of them. But, having said that, they have to know who is boss and be treated with the respect every living thing deserves and that is to give them the best life you can. They should learn to respect your living environment and you should provide your pet with a suitable living environment for its needs, mentally and physically.

Oh boy! I didnt mean to get onto this subject but it is so close to my heart. Most rabbit hutches are much too small for the animals they are intended for. The largest ones are only really suitable for guinea pigs. A rabbit should also have the run of your garden every day or a least an area as large as a small garden to run around in every day. They need to be able to run and jump freely. They also love company. Anyone who has seen rabbits charging around and jumping over each other in great excitement could never again confine a little life to perminent prison.

This is why our rabbits have always been friendly. We have had nine rabbits in all five or six at one time. Years ago the village was very quiet and every morning we would open our homemade rabbit hutches and give the rabbits the freedom of the garden. They learnt that they could jump over the garden gate or, even more fun was to jump onto the retaining garden wall and from there jump through the boundary trees into the driveway and then up the road to the recreation ground!! The neighbours enjoyed watching them from their windows (most of our neighbours then were elderly), and the rabbits were added entertainment.

They would return several times a day and sometimes not bother going out at all but, every night we simply went looking for them, a couple of claps of our hands would bring them running to us and back to the garden and straight up the ramps into their homes. They generally stayed
together so, this was an easy exercise. And often if we were a little late going to look for them, we would find them already home and snuggled up safe and sound for the night.

Occasionally, Fluff would decide to lay in the road, and refuse to move even for a blast of a car horn but this did not happen very often and as everyone knew her, she was generally moved by a friendly neighbour giving her a gentle nudge. She would then slowly and sedately make her way home, onto our driveway. There was one problem we did have - everyone using our driveway had to be warned that the rabbits may come charging on to it at anytime. They sometimes went to sleep under cars too!!!

When gardening they would make you the most interesting thing!! This meant they would try to jump on your knee, if you were crouching down, and quickly run up your back and jump off your shoulder highly entertaining!! But, mostly you would find some rabbit or other nudging your hand, asking for attention!!

The most annoying thing about rabbits in the garden are that they only eat your most treasured plants, never the weeds!! Well, except dandelion leaves. Our rose bushes, only started growing leaves and flowers 3feet from the ground, many of the bushes were the same even the grape vines!! The rabbits loved the heaps of cuttings that we made when trimming everything back! They loved the snow, windy days, sunny days and bonfire night.
He he oh yes they would all come out of their indoor sections and sit together in rows watching the fireworks going off!! Even the loud ones!!

Now, our garden is growing to full capacity - no more rabbits to select the tasty, tender new shoots!! No more cats eating the cat mint, then, lying on it so much that it finally gives up the ghost again!! Ah So, now it is just the birds!!

When we had to take down the gazebo, it also meant that we could nolonger hang the bird feeders from it. But, we have found a much better alternative (from B&Q) it was £10 and well worth every penny. We have put it up just outside the breakfast room window and our bed and breakfast guests have been enjoying watching the birds whilst eating their breakfasts!!!

The Weather!! Who will just stop talking about it!!

Oh Boy what wonderful weather for talking about the weather!! Everybody is talking about the weather. Well, I simply will refuse to mention it at all......

Sad to say we have had to take down the white gazebo that protects us/our friends and guests from the elements!! Along with it came down the pretty party lights that normally adorn the inside and create, we feel, a welcoming holiday/festive/warming atmosphere to a dark night. Ah shame!!
The whole thing was threatening to take off so, if we were to sleep soundly the decision had to be made. Now the tables and chairs are exposed to the elements!! Not for too much longer though, this weekend they will be packed away into the outbuildings at the back and replaced with the hardier metal ones.

Also, the fencing fell foul of the elements!!! Last week, it was 2 of the fence panels and last night a third succumbed to the howling, tyrannical elements! Peter will be pleased when he gets home tonight! Now he has something really worthwhile to be doing this weekend - 3 fence panels to replace instead of 2!! How will be manage to contain his excitement and get his work done tomorrow and Friday? Maybe I shall have to put off telling him about the little problem with the loo and I am sure he wont notice the little drip running along the beam in the lounge!!! Ha Ha only joking he he. Hmmm

Given the chance today I shall be out in the garden, trimming and tidying up a little, hopefully with a little warmth on my face and only a little movement of my curls!!

Yes, okay enough is enough!! Everywhere has something that, someone somewhere can pick holes in!! No! Yes!

We have the most incredible "invisible Indian breakfast tea!". It really is so different. Could be mistaken for hot water but, only by the most unimaginative of guests! And luckily for us we only attract those in possession of the best of imaginations and those able to use a little ingenuity.

This morning our guests requested breakfast at 8am so, I arose at 7am to prepare a tasty feast with which they could break their fast! Such a genteel couple, staying here to search for her ancestral routes, but where were they it was now 8.25am and only the slightest sounds of life to be heard from the direction of their room!!??

Five minutes later they appeared, with an unspoken question written on both their faces. Something stopped me from asking , if they were okay, had they slept in? Hmmm guess who had forgotten to put the clocks back!!! Oh yes!! There is always one why did it have to be me!!!

Well, yet again I simply have to say "What a lovely, lovely couple....sitting down to eat their 8am breakfast at 7.30am!!!" I was so shocked, I returned to the kitchen to choke on my tea and and truly appreciate what a lovely, lovely couple and just to thank my lucky stars that we have the most wonderful of people to stay!!! Thank you MR and MRS Thompson.

If you feel in the mood to stay in a very friendly, homely, 2oo year old Bed and Breakfast to book your room with us all you need is a good old fashioned sense of humour!!!

If questioned all the above will be vehemently denied!! They booked both rooms, having the place to themselves, they were all able to relax and enjoy a break. Their daughter has recently moved to the area, working for one of the local stables. It was brilliant to meet such a close-knit, happy family, chat about the trials and tribulations of bringing up children, laugh about funny memories and hear about village life on the Borders!!

The mandolin that my son James had bought with his birthday money arrived, and much to our amazement the Clan Chief was also learning to play!! Maybe next time he comes down we can persuade him to bring his mandolin with him!! They met years ago through work and they now meet up, twice a year I think they said, for a few days walking either through the English or Dutch countryside (lovely wives permitting of course!) .

Blessed with blue skies they set off every morning after a hearty breakfast, clad in walking boots and braving the Autumnal chill in khaki shorts - I was seriously impressed. Map in hand, plans made to be broken, knowing that they were going to have a great time regardless: they left me each morning reading my book in the garden, wishing that I was going with them.

Then they would return late afternoon to seek out a pint of the best to accompany a plate of good honest food. The Wheatsheaf not doing food on a Sunday or a Monday night, they decided to try Casanova's in Hungerford where they had a good Italian meal, then on our recommendation they went to the Blue Boar in Aldbourne where the setting impressed them (on the village green) but, to my horror the food did not!! The savoury pudding was not up to scratch. Feeling responsible (but, grateful that they had said), I told them that we had eaten there three times recently and each time been very pleased with the selection and quality!! So, what happened on Monday hey?? Oh dear lets hope it was a one-off!! Last night they went to the Wheatsheaf and had a brilliant meal hurray!!! Well, done Tracy - her pies are something special!!! And we shall have to check up on the Blue Boar again!

Sadly, their few days have come to an end but, before Mike deposits his true friend off at Southampton Airport they have decided on one more sortie - that of exploring Littlecote with all that history!

I hope they managed to get in to have a good look around the historic rooms, particularly the "Dutch Room". It got its name from the Dutch prisoners held in there in the 18th century to relieve their boredom they famously painted the whole of the interior, quite spectacularly!! The stately tudor mansion is well worth a visit even if only for the exterior - there is also the roman excavations to explore. This is all within walking distance of our bed and breakfast www.curerscottage.co.uk.

Well, you two, it was wonderful meeting you and I wish I could think of something funny to say - but NO I can't!!! Shall think of you when the weather is sunny and there is a chill in the air!!

Thinking of having a Break Away why not check us out!

Our Guest Book - Memories of those who have been to stay.

Though I hate to admit it, I am really rather proud of the wonderful comments that our guests are writing in our guest book. I have been told that I am not making good use of it. That I should have more about it on the website.

Its a bit of a strange one, I didnt expect to feel so worried about everyone enjoying their stay and so nervous about guests being disappointed with their accommodation. We were enlighten by a fascinating gentleman who came to stay when we had first opened. He gave me so much more confidence in what we had to offer and, some great advice. 1. you must have a guest book and 2. a page on the website Hotel versus our B&B.

He stayed with his partner twice on business and kindly told me that they would not be back for a year because their diary was full and he could see that there was nothing around here for that period. But, they planned on coming back whenever in the area!!

I have decided to try to scan some pages on to the blogspot - so here's hoping it works.

The Weekend Buzz Great Parties and More Weddings!!

Another weekend of running our Bed and Breakfast passes. Why am I so surprised at the number of interesting and lovely people that we meet?

Last week, we had couple who came to stay after their daughters wedding. Everything had gone well with the wedding and they were being treated to a weekend at Littlecote House Hotel, but decided to come and stay here first. They were so much fun and we discovered that we had lots in common and feel quite sad that they do not live closer, because, I am sure we would have become good friends. I hope they read this!! Hmmm is anyone out there??!!

This weekend there was a fantastic fancy dress party on Friday night and we had some of the guests staying. Two separate couples. They looked brilliant in their 70's and 20's costumes. Both couples were leaving their little children at home for the first time, though feeling the pangs, were determined to make the most of it!! It sounded like a really lively event - lots of dancing - thats what I like to hear!! Breakfast at 10.30am was very welcome!!!

On Saturday we had darling little Erin to stay, she was so sweet and chatty and looked charming in her pretty dress ready to go to the wedding. And of course she brought her retinue , Mummy and Daddy and Grandmother. I wish I had a photo of her to show you.

Birds , Birds, Birds...

We have been so busy, I simply have not had the chance to write!!!

Today, my father came over for the day, well first we went shopping and to the Blue Boar in Aldbourne for a quick drink on the way to Swindon. Yes, my father enjoys his pint "of your strongest please!" When you reach 87 surely, if you cannot insist on what you really want, what is the point of life!! He can no longer indulge in quantity, so strength it has to be - and flavour of course too!!! hmmm I think that still comes into it! It is purely medicinal, naturally. It helps him to relax and when he relaxes the pain in his knees lessens!! Yes, I go with that too. So, I need to add here that the delivery of the healing liquor needs to be as close to 11am as possible so, that the rest of the day can run (ah ha - not a good choice of verb there!), more smoothly!! Less painfully.

The Bionic knees have been given a good hammering by my darling Dad, so there is nothing that can be done to alleviate the current situation. But, he is made of all the good old-fashioned values of life and will always plough on. Today however, for the first time ever, he sat in the car having enjoyed the change of scenery and asked me to run around the shops (but please DO NOT RUSH) whilst he read the newspaper.

Birds, Birds, Birds... We sat in the garden to enjoy lunch in the shade of a beautiful sunny day.To our amazement the relaxing occasional twitter, chirrup and scuffle of the birds in the garden was suddenly disturbed by and constant and persistent chatter of a group of very noisy excited Goldfinches. There were four of them, a family group we surmised. Out of the Lilac tree they flew each selecting a seeded thistle head of their own. It was brilliant to watch them, and to be able to listen to their constant banter, was an honour, only ruined by call of the school bell and James to collect from Newbury!!! Ah...we were so disappointed that we had to disturb them.
But, as we left we both had the feeling that they were discussing what a nuisance we had been and could we please hurry up and go!! Ha!

So, this is why we grow thistles in our garden, not only are they beautiful but, they also attract the painted finches!! They are such beautiful birds. Well, worth the effort. They also enjoy the cornflower seeds. Must get Matt or James to take some close-ups!

Walking...

Last night, must have been early evening, rather than late afternoon, I was sitting in the garden reading, some what wrapped up I have to add, when, I got a phone call from Paul wanting a room for two for the night. He explained that they were walking along the cycle path from Reading to Bath.

Well, I had been having a lazy day, had treated the children out to lunch at the Pelican in Froxfield, knowing that really I should be busy ironing!! I had done the B&B rooms etc and decided that we probably would not have any more guests tonight. So, panic set in - what time would you be arriving? I asked 8 - 8.15pm fine I could cope with getting the bedding ironed before then.

I have bought such lovely bedding for the rooms and it is a devil to iron!! But, just as I was finishing the beds the sky was growing really dark and then the down pour started.

Wondering where exactly they were I decided to ring them back and offer them a lift for the last part of their journey. The night was drawing-in too! It would be such a shame to get soaked on the last min. The sensible pair had decided to eat at the Dundas Arms and, whilst enjoying their refreshments to catch the train to Hungerford from the station opposite. Brilliant.

I met them in Hungerford, being received by happy smiling faces!!

They left the next morning after a good nights sleep and a hearty breakfast, with promises to return one day should they find themselves in this area again!!!

I wonder where they are now? I wish the weather would improve for them, even just a little, it would make such a difference.

This is what I love about this job, meeting such interesting and lovely people and helping them a little along their way!! Great!!

All Our Cyclists have been and gone!! Or, have they? Sunday sounds promising.

Ah the last of our pre-booked intrepid cyclists have all passed through Chilton Foliat, on their adventures to Bath, Bristol or Reading and beyond... I shall miss thinking of them all each day wondering how they are getting along. Where they are stopping for lunch, whether they meet the barge- horses towing the barges along... Oh well.

But this weekend has been great fun with guests from all over the place, Jersey C.I. to Singapore!! Celebrating weddings and family gatherings and we have even had a delightful couple on their Honeymoon!!! They had to make a detour to attend their bestman's wedding - indeed returning the honour infact. How wonderful!!!

Everyone has kindly filled in our guest book, making their mark and now permanently in our memories. Yes, I am a soppy date! (as my mother would say). But, we do meet the most interesting and lovliest of people here. Do all B&Bs or, are we the exception? Hmmm an interesting thought.

Hey, this is the week for cyclists!!

Well, where do I begin?!! We have had a wonderful week so far, and, more to come! Last night we had a lovely couple from Abingdon staying over-night as part of their break-away. They were cycling along the Kennet and Avon Canal but also wandering off the track to have a good look around. They seemed to be really enjoying themselves and made me feel envious of their freedom, fitness and experience - Peter and I must get planning - first we need to get fit!!

I am hoping that if they get the chance they will let us know about their experience. What they found the most difficult part of the journey maybe or, the most beautiful places etc. Would they do it again or, where they may plan to go next. I would be delighted to hear from any of our guests.

I am new to this blogging malarkey and thinking of becoming a twitter?? Is that correct?? Now, please be polite!! I may be able to read your mind(s?).

The night before last (Monday), we had two Dads and their two sons stay over as part of their cycling holiday. We were their first stop as they were starting in Reading. Unfortunately, it hadnt occurred to me that they would want to eat in the Wheatsheaf next door, and so had to disappoint them by telling them that they do not do food on a Monday at all. I felt really embarrassed and they must have been miffed to say the least but, they did not show it!! I offered to take them into Hungerford and pick them up later. Explaining that this is something that we are happy to do for guests who either do not have transport or, have done enough for one day!!

The boys enjoyed pizzas at Casanovas but, not before the Dads supped a good pint at the Plume!! They decided to walk back. Which reminds me that I must go out and buy some suitable torches for guests to borrow.

If there is anybody out there reading this and interested in cycling why not put questions on my blog and maybe, just maybe someone will be able to answer you queries!!! And I would be delighted too!!

Tomorrow we have more intrepid explorers arriving!!! Hmmm cannot wait to meet them. Hope the weather stays good for them too. It has been brilliant today.

Champagne Breakfast to Start a Celebratory Break Away!!

What a wonderful way to start the day for that special occasion!!

Fancy a change? A little relaxation, just want to be yourselves, getaway from the pressures at home and work, re-kindle those romantic memories? Well... why not come and stay with us for a little change in pace, park the car in our driveway and walk everywhere. Or, plan local daily excursions.

We are not licensed to sell alcohol, but you can treat yourselves to your favourite bubbly and put it in the fridge for that extra special feeling that only champagne can offer!

Many years ago now, we lived in Cambridgeshire where Peter worked for an American company that believed in making all their staff feel appreciated. His boss would organise little unusual events as a, " thank you everybody!", to his development team. Brilliant. That was the beginning of our champagne breakfast celebrations!! Yeah!! And it really does work wonders!!

Our breakfast menu is extensive complimenting the additional champagne, so, why not? Everybody deserves a little pampering even YOU!!

Cycling The Kennet and Avon Canal or taking the train from London to Bristol and Cycling back to London!

Well, we are very surprised at the number of keen cyclist that we have had staying in our Bed and Breakfast. And there are more to come!!!

Recently we had a family from Reading who got the train to Bath and then were cycling home stopping near Devizes and then with us. Cycling 70miles in 2 days had been quite a new challenge so, they were thinking of catching the train from Hungerford. But they had enjoyed their stay here and were thinking of coming back and cycling the missing stretch another time!! They had slept in the smaller of our two rooms with a mattress on the floor for their teenage daughter. They have friends who were also thinking of doing the same thing.

It seems that the most difficult part is between here and Devizes, as it is more up and down and on and off the tow path and the roads.

We have also had 3 friends stay here for one night in the larger room. They had taken the train from London to Bristol and then cycled to us, all in one day!!! Yes, I thought they were quite mad!! Wonderful, extremely fit and great fun. They even decided to walk into Hungerford to stretch their legs before their evening meal......see crazy people!!

And we have even more crazy people coming soon. They are booked in for a Sunday night and will be doing the same journey - train from London - Bristol and cycling all the way back just stopping the once over night here!!! Wow!!

To be young, fit, full of energy with masses of go!!!
I admire them so much. Hearing the interesting things they have done, places they have been and future plans that they have!! Fantastic

Clarissa's Graduation Lunch in Exeter

Ooops...slipping-up with my blog!! This article should have been posted before now but, I find that it takes more time than I would ever have imagined to sit and focus. My apologises to anyone out there who just may be interested!!

Monday, 20th July, was the day of our darling daughter's graduation. She did a 4 year B Ed in primary education specialising in music. We were all so excited and quite nervous that something should go wrong but, we needn't have worried it was a fantastic day! The weather behaved itself and only succumbed to a faint drizzle towards the end of the day.

The ceremony was to start in Exeter Cathedral at 2pm so we decided to go for lunch before hand, as we had no idea how long everything would take. Big brother Matt had arrived home from London the day before and travelled down to Devon with us. (Mum and Dad and little brother James). Boyfriend Rob and darling daughter Clarissa would meet us in Exeter.

The previous Friday we had decided that it would be wise to book a table in a restaurant close to the Cathedral as they would probably all be busy that day. We all went on the nett from our various locations and eventually decided on one opposite the Cathedral. It was advertising a lunchtime special of £20 a head so, I rang them to book. Had we left it too late would they have a table for 6 still?! Yes, brilliant - "oh and by the way?" I asked "The lunchtime special is still £20 isnt it?", "No, as it is graduation week we have put it up to £35 a head", "Oh no that is terrible!! I am afraid we cannot afford that and on principle wouldnt anyway!!" I said horrified.

Hmmm so the lunch that was worth £120 plus wine etc had now rocketed up to £210 all because they were going to take advantage of the student families. I now wonder whether we could have eaten there and then declared that the meal was only worth what we had been originally quoted on the internet?? Hmmm but we just could not have coped with the upset.

And... we would not have found Angela's Restaurant in New Bridge St!! Where we had a fabulous meal for £15 a head on the lunchtime special menu. They had not put their prices up! The food delicious, presentation delightful and all exceptional value. The staff were warm and friendly having bought helium balloons to mark the occasion and add a little frivolity to the atmosphere. We could not have started the celebrations any better - thank you very much everyone at Angela's Restaurant. If you would like to know more about them then please do ring and let them know that you heard of them from my blog!! Tel. 01392 499038.

Feeling celebratory and satisfied we wandered up to the Cathedral and the sight of black gowns everywhere. What a wonderful sight! Fitted out in her hired attire Clarissa, squealed, laughed cuddled and kissed until time to get serious and enter the beautiful, austere, cathedral and focus on the gravity of the day! A new generation of teachers were born!! They all looked wonderful. I dont think Clarissa could stop smiling and Matt her photographer brother snapped and zoomed away as Rob pointed out as many of her close friends as he could!

Out into the Cathedral close everyone gathered for their group photos. And if they hadnt already done so, queued for their official photos.

What a wonderful day. Clarissa and her brother spent a precious hour on Exmouth beach before returning to Wiltshire in the evening together. They had wanted to book both rooms but we already had one booking. Heinz also mentioned travelling to Gatwick Airport the next day. Hmmm ..... this set alarm bells ringing!! Where were they travelling from? And how far did they think they had to travel to Gatwick the next day? I decided to do a google search etc and the results were saying 3.5 miles whereas, I felt it was closer to 100 miles. When I added the county to the search it gave the true distance and complete route - Had Heinz had the correct details or the mystery map?

I emailed him all the facts and told him that we could fit all his family in one room, if they would like and explained the details. But, also understood if they wanted to change their minds. No, seemingly unconcerned they were not to be deterred!!!

I was delighted with their decision but, also a little anxious that nothing had been lost in translation etc!!! What were they expecting and would they be happy with what we had to offer them!!?? Where were they travelling from and too? Would it all work out for them?!!

Of course this is none of my business and one has to assume that guests have done their research and know what they are doing!!! But, I just had to keep my fingers crossed.

The morning of the day they were due to arrive we had a mystery phone call at 8am. I was in the middle of breakfasts and did not get to answer it before it rang off. Oh dear was this Heinz trying to get in touch?! I tried ringing back a couple of times and then left a message - it hadnt been him at all - still do not know who it was!

But, we took it as a good omen and they that were on their way here! Hurray! We were so looking forward to meeting them all. (We had also had a call from Jo and David travelling from Jersey!) Things were looking good for a lovely day and new guest arrivals!

Not being sure when they would arrive, we had rushed around making sure everything was just so in plenty of time. Rooms made up fresh flower arrangements etc. So, were sitting in the garden relaxing with our books when Heinz and David come walking down the garden path!

We were not to be disappointed by our own expectant excitement of having (as we now had dubbed them) "the Swiss Family Robinson" coming to stay! Yeah!

We immediately took to them all, what a lovely family. Heinz spoke excellent English and had a wonderful warm smile, they were tired from their drive down from the Lake District so, after the initial enquiries and familiarisation they had a rest in their room (yes, it was fine) and then went out around the village and recreation ground to blow the cobwebs away.

One of the joys of running a bed and breakfast is meeting such interesting people from all over the world. Heinz, Nicole, David and Tim have left a lasting impression on me and I hope that we meet them again sometime, maybe at the end of another of their expeditions around the various regions of the British Isles. They have travelled previously around the North East and have been down to Cornwall and Devon on other holidays too! So, there is hope that our paths may cross again!

I hope we do not have to wait too long, to hear again the happy laughter of a family playing cards in the evening in our breakfast room!

May we wish you all the best and thank you for choosing to come and stay with us!

Free Range Columbian Blackleg Hens Organic Eggs

For a while now we have been getting our eggs from a beautiful local farm, and these eggs have been the topic of conversation for many a breakfast!!

We buy all the miss-shapen ones that get rejected by the retailers!! (hope I havent gone too far there!). Many of them are double yokers and we have heard of the odd triple yoker!! Today, I am waiting for the arrival of guests from Italy who booked tonight via the Internet. Not sure what time they are going to arrive or even if they will. This is one of the problems of not taking cards.

It has not been for the want of trying, I hasten to add, as this I had deemed an essential part of the business - how much easier it would be for all concerned. However, this has proved to be anything but a simple process. Having opened my new business bank account with the bank that seemed initially to be the most responsive out of those I tried, I discovered much to my annoyance that yes, I would get the money from each transaction into my account within approx 24hours but, no they would not deal with me until the business had been going at least another 3 months and even then they could not promise anything. So, I changed banks! Now having gone through the whole yes, yes, yes, rigmarole, the final proviso is that I would have to wait 5/6 days for each transaction to be processed. The origninal promise was of 24 hours!! The cost of the whole process for card acceptance (that I think I negotiated) was £450 a year plus any extra usage charges that also may be incurred.

So, I decided, that at the moment, only having two double rooms and therefore being a very small Bed and Breakfast, that it just was not worth it. The charges, including a very generous breakfast, are £60 for two people and £45 single occupancy.

I am so hoping that this is not putting too many people off and now that I have explained why I do not accept card payments, I will not feel so bad about always having to ask for cash!!

I would be interested in hearing any comments from prospective guests - thank you!!

Cycling the Kennet and Avon Canal

Last night we had a lovely couple staying from Bath. They had cycled from Reading having caught the train there earlier in the day. It was their first proper cycle ride and they were enjoying it immensely, thinking of where to go next! They had their evening meal at the Wheatsheaf Pub (next door but 2) and had a nice meal whilst soaking up the atmosphere of our local on a Saturday night.

Today, they have decided, on my recommendation, to take a little detour and visit the Tudor Mansion, Littlecote House and the Roman Mosaic. I made them fresh sandwiches for their journey. (They chose to have my freshly made pork patties, with carrot and coriander in them and plenty of salad too). I hope they find a beautiful spot to enjoy their picnic. They are now traveling to Devizes where they are stopping the night before the last stretch home the next day.

Well, if you get the chance to read this, I would love to hear how you both got on. So, please feel free to add your comments. The weather has stayed good for you thank goodness. Best Wishes
Julie, oh yes and thank you for the lovely comments you made in my visitors book.

My father, aka Grandad, is coming over today like he does most Sundays and we are going to have a BBQ in the garden.
